Job Summary

Manage the planning and direction of departmental activities including the maintenance and reconciliation of the ledger accounts and financial statements. Identify, review, research, and make management aware of emerging accounting and financial reporting issues, including evaluation of acct. taxes, and ratemaking implications.

Essential Duties:

  • Maintain Company Accounting records in compliance with GAAP and Regulatory Accounting standards. Direct preparation of monthly accounting statements (IS, B/S, SOCF) as well as required regulatory financial reporting requirements i.e., PA PUC Annual Report and EIA quarterly reports. Establish and maintain Company capitalization policies.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures that provide comprehensive internal controls designed to mitigate risk and compliance with SOX.
  • Coordinate closing functions with parent company.
  • Review financial statements and reports for external auditors, regulatory agencies, rating agencies, analysts, and internal management reporting prepared under the Director's supervision.
  • Direct the implementation of internal accounting control activities.
  • Direct FERC/PUC reporting and rate case support.
  • Review company's external financing documents to ensure there is no potential for adverse impact.
  • Analyze proposed changes in accounting standards and advise management of potential impact of proposals.
  • Serve as a company witness in regulatory proceedings.
  • Analyze the accounting impacts of non-standard transactions.
  • Oversee the payable and collection activities.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to accounting staff.
  • Oversee external audit compliance.
  • Support the Financial Planning and Analysis, Regulatory and Tax functions as well as supports other operating units within the Essentials family of companies.
  • Assists with other tasks or projects as assigned

Basic Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills Abilities:

  • Strong technical abilities in accounting systems, budgeting, and cost control principles; automated financial and accounting reporting systems with specific experience using SAP ERP software as well as other software (i.e. Microsoft Office); knowledge of SEC, GAAP, and other federal and state regulations.
  • Understanding of natural gas industry operations terms, practices, regulations, and needs and People's overall strategic objectives and policies.
  • Knowledge in rate tariffs and rate regulatory concepts essential.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills; communicate effectively (clearly, concisely and professionally) with internal customers
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills essential.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal, communications (oral and written) and team lead as well as team player abilities.

Experience/ Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field required
  • Master's degree and/or CPA strongly preferred
  • Minimum of ten years of utility experience in progressively responsible positions in corporate accounting, regulatory accounting, and cost accounting.
  • Knowledge of SAP financial system or general ledger design strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated strength in accounting and attention-to-detail.strength in accounting and attention-to-detail.


    Working Conditions:
  • Perform sedentary work- exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
  • Working conditions may include travel to work sites of Essential Utilities and/or other constituents
  • Travel Requirements up to 10% and overnight travel may be expected in certain circumstances
