Provides intraoperative care to patients by functioning as the scrub person assisting the surgical team during an operative procedure. The Surgical Technologist, Strategic Staffing Solutions, will be a full-time employee of WVU Medicine and will be placed on assignment at any of our system hospitals and/or clinics.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. 18 months of scrub experience in a tertiary setting

2. Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) Certification

3. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

4. West Virginia, Ohio and/or Pennsylvania state and/or federal fingerprint-based criminal background check(s) for regulated areas, as applicable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE:

1. Knowledge and experience in multiple specialties preferred

2. Experience in Same Day Surgery setting beneficial

3. Experience working in all trauma levels beneficial

1. Utilizes quality aseptic technique when working in an unsterile or sterile role in the OR.

2. Assists the circulating RN in monitoring technique of all persons in the OR to maintain a sterile field.

3. Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating RN following established guidelines.

4. Assists with gowning and gloving surgeons and positioning equipment and instruments.

5. Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team during a surgical procedure.

6. Operates specialty equipment after receiving specific training.

7. Assists with transportation and positioning of the patients.

8. Begin to anticipate the needs of the surgical team.

9. Prepares supplies and equipment for surgical procedure following preference cards.

10. Demonstrate appropriate and correct case preparation.

11. Assists with sterilization and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment.

12. Monitors inventory; orders; and restocks supplies, instruments, and equipment.

13. Removes out-of-date items and discards or reprocesses following established guidelines.

14. Assists with the general cleaning duties of the department.

15. Performs equipment checks as assigned.

16. Assists with clerical work, and record keeping duties including the gathering of indicator data such as frequency of events.

17.Prepares and updates preference cards and instru ment tray lists as directed.

18. Assists with the proper recording of patient charges.

19. Unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) may have limited access to medications including during transport of non-controlled substances at the request of a licensed care provider.

20. Able to be a mentor for new hires within 6 months of employment.

21. Call with a response time of 20-45 minutes, dependent upon assignment location call response requirement.

1. Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.

2. Ability to lift up to 40-pounds and push/pull heavy loaded carts up to 200 lbs

3. Possess visual, hearing, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability.

4. Ability to wear lead for extended periods of time.
