Smith + Nephew seeks a Head, Program Management, Enabling Technologies in the Robotics and Enabling Technologies franchise. This leader is responsible for program management and leadership of new product development projects for Enabling Technologies used for orthopedic total joint replacement procedures.

What will you be doing?

The Head, Program Management, Enabling Technologies will direct, create, and maintain the overall master plan across the programs, manage governance processes, provide tracking and reporting of platform initiatives including value capture, as well as provide coaching and support to key initiative leaders. This role will partner closely with both internal cross-functional peers (R&D, PMO, Marketing, Quality and Regulatory Affairs) as well as develop and lead external partnerships as required. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of deliveringinnovative new technologies to the global marketplace.

The Head, Program Management, Enabling Technologies will have a broad understanding of medical device business as well as experience with key geographical regions, in addition to a deep understanding of program management principles and practices. The role will work closely with R&D and Commercial partners to develop an overall program pipeline strategy that aligns with key product group strategies and priorities. The Head, Program Management, Enabling Technologies reports to the VP NPD PMO. This position will be based in the Pittsburgh, PA office and will require program-related travel to other Smith + Nephew development locations.

Program Management and Portfolio Management

  • Establish portfolio management vision and direction for long-range planning, define and ensure appropriate resource allocation and project prioritization to achieve customer and business value.

  • Provide direct and regular communication to senior management on progress, opportunities, and issues. Interact with Franchise leadership to help set Franchise direction for product pipeline and product commercialization.

  • Collaborate with key project sponsors across the range of cross-functional expertise and competencies necessary for the successful commercialization of targeted projects.

  • Ensure that the functional portfolio of project roadmaps are current, integrated and aligned to functional KPIs and the 3E (Employee Experience, Functional Excellence and Efficiencies) objectives/goals

  • When necessary, coordinate development and implementation of processes, tools, and methodologies for use by large transformational initiatives.

Leadership / Team Management & Development

  • Lead development activities for complex electromechanical systems and software development and processes, including integration of software technical project management with design control activities.

  • Form and lead cross-functional new product development teams to execute project objectives. Develop teamwork within project team and between project team and other groups. Gain alignment and support with business partners to achieve project objectives.

  • Identify and build external alliances and partnerships as necessary to support program product development objectives, including extension of core competencies and capacities.

  • Embrace and lead a culture of inclusiveness and multi-cultural engagement through coaching and feedback to peers and the broader community in the Global PMO org in alignment with the Smith + Nephew Leadership Imperatives.

  • Develop a strong pipeline of global and diverse leaders. Enable a high-performance team culture, provides leadership, direction, coaching, feedback to peers and project team members.

What will you need to be successful?

  • B.S degree in Engineering or equivalent in related discipline, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or integrated engineering systems preferred.

  • PMP, Agile/ScrumMaster certification preferred.

  • A minimum 10 years' engineering and product development and/or project management experience involving large multi-disciplinary teams in a medical devices environment, including experience developing software and complex electromechanical systems.

  • Program Management experience with a demonstrated ability to create, shape, align the organization to a future vision of large-scale product platforms.

  • Excellent negotiation, facilitation, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Innovative, self-motivated, high energy and results driven.

  • Executive presentation skills, a collaborative approach, the ability to connect, and the ability to manage complexity and ambiguity including the ability to zoom-in/zoom-out for strategic and tactical, high-level, and detailed discussions.

  • The ability to develop high performing teams and lead in a matrixed environment.

  • A minimum of 5 years of people management experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to build interdependent internal and external partnerships, acting as the mediator between organizations while optimizing the value proposition and global customer focus.

  • Up to approximately 10% domestic and international travel.
