Senior R&D Chemist - Additive Manufacturing

As theSenior R&D Chemist, reporting directly to the Additive Manufacturing R&D Leader, you will focus on developments of PPG's additive manufacturing technology, Ambient Reactive Extrusion (ARE). You will solve technical problems, lead new application development initiatives across PPG business segments, manage multiple government-funded research programs, and generate patentable technical innovations in the Additive Manufacturing space.

Further, you will be required to quickly acquire a thorough understanding of the business, the competitors in the additive manufacturing space and the internal PPG functions that influence the business or global organization's success. You will participate in technical teams and may be requested to lead a technical project from start to finish.

Key Responsibilities

*Lead and project manager research deliverables to guide new innovations in materials technology for the Ambient Reactive Extrusion (ARE) platform via government research programs. These deliverables include regular project updates and presentations to both internal and external entities. These multi-year programs will also require annual and final technical reports.

*Perform laboratory work for the formulations that are feasible with ARE printing technologies and multiple material and physical characterizations. This involves formulating new crosslinking strategies, developing new polymeric compositions, investigating functional fillers, characterizing material characteristics, understanding structure-property relationships for both mechanical properties and 3D buildability, and experimenting with new cure technologies.

*Develop new material technologies and ARE applications based on technical requirements according to short and long-term business and technical strategies.

*Keep up-to-date on relevant technical literature - journal articles, patents, and trade magazines; including attending relevant conferences and seminars.

*Generate patentable technical innovations while identifying and understanding the competitive IP landscape. This includes developing patent landscapes and prior art searches and collaborating with the legal department to create a thriving intellectual property portfolio for ARE and PPG.

*Develop business insights relative to competitors and internal PPG functions that influence the business' success.

*Maintain detailed records and documentation.

*Collaborate with team members, management, and customers.

Qualifications

*A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or Materials Science is required.

*3+ years of work experience in polymeric materials, coatings, or additive manufacturing/3d printing.

*Formulation expertise is required.

*Additive manufacturing/3D printing experience is not required but very beneficial.

*Foundational chemistry knowledge, with polymers/organic chemistry.

*Directly and indirectly lead other team members to solve technical problems together.

*Must be a US Person.
