As a Research Chemist, you will support the Casting Platform Team which functions within the Optical Monomers and Coatings group of the Specialty Coatings and Materials team of PPG. The Casting Platform team is dedicated to the research and development of production processes for the ophthalmic lenses industry to commercialize new optical materials developed by PPG, and to supporting customers and users of PPG's optical materials by providing technical service. You will support process development efforts and troubleshooting and root cause analysis efforts conducted as part of the technical service activities with experience in polymer chemistry / organic chemistry. This position is onsite in Monroeville, PA.

Key Responsibilities
Pose observed phenomenon regarding chemical reactions by proposing reaction mechanisms that can be further studied or tested experimentally.
Propose potential chemical effect caused by the introduction of specific compounds or molecules into the reactive systems involved in the processing of optical monomers.
Conduct generic interpretation of analytical reports.
Help design experiments and independently and safely conduct experiments.
Conduct chemical reactions to prepare polymerizable compositions at laboratory and pilot scale conditions.
Formulate polymerizable compositions per the instructions provided by the optical material expert.
Synthesize novel organic compounds following reaction paths instructed by the senior synthesis Chemists.
Investigate and provide advice on the potential effects of specific molecules or chemical compounds.
Generate tests reports, weekly reports, and project updates to be distributed within the PPG organization via oral presentations or documenting them in the PPG library.
Maintain laboratory in compliance with PPG EHS policies and official regulations with PPG EHS.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry
0-3 years of experience in research and development and polymer chemistry
