The Dermody Lab at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a highly motivated Research Technician to provide research support in a viral pathogenesis-focused laboratory. Our laboratory group is curious, collaborative, and committed to mentoring, and we are excited to hire someone who shares these interests. The technician's role will be to support the lab and assist in the execution of a variety of laboratory experiments. Primary tasks will include general lab maintenance, virus purification, viral titer determination, cell culture, PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, and SDS-PAGE. The technician will also assist with animal colony maintenance, tissue harvests, and histological sample preparation. A goal for all hired technicians within the lab is that they are supported to develop and publish on independent projects. The ideal candidate should have knowledge of basic laboratory skills and must be able to work independently on tasks. Prior working experience with laboratory mammalian specimens is favorable but not required. Interest in helping others and working in team settings is integral to this position. Attention to detail and dependability are highly valued qualities of successful candidates. This position is located at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in Lawrenceville. PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, and current TB test will be required prior to the start of employment. * Conducts a variety of laboratory experiments, involving skills such as molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA/protein), viral purification/infection/quantification, animal models of viral infection and pathogenesis, cell culture, and flow cytometry * Participates in collaborative and supportive science within the lab and with domestic and international researchers * Tests, troubleshoots, and analyzes data* Supports the management of a murine animal colony with record-keeping and weekly animal maintenance responsibilities* Manages media and stock preparation, distribution, and testing * Maintains and organizes detailed and accurate protocol and data records for lab notebook* Develops and shares presentation material in lab-supported meetings (journal clubs, lab meetings, and working group meetings)
Light - Maximum lifting of up to 40 lbs., with frequent lifting/carrying of up to 10 lbs., or a negligible amount; significant walking or standing may be required, or may involve sitting with a degree of pushing and pulling.
