The University of Pittsburgh, Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences, is seeking a Research Technician in the Sved lab. This is a key position as part of an active research team in a Department of Neuroscience research laboratory focused on studying the rewarding properties of nicotine and cannabinoids in experimental animals. The incumbent will be responsible for learning and performing established protocols for testing drug effects on animal behavior, maintaining the rat colony, collecting blood/brain samples, and performing established assays. The incumbent will work with the Principal Investigator and the research team to establish protocols and record keeping methods, maintain records, and assist in the supervision of undergraduate student research assistants. The incumbent will also need to interact and coordinate activities with collaborating laboratories. Experience in handling experimental animals is required. The ideal candidate has excellent organizational and communication skills and a strong interest in behavioral neuroscience research.
Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.
Basic handling of rats in behavioral experiments; basic computer skills, including the use of Excel spreadsheets; basic laboratory skills, including making solutions.
Physical effort: 40% of the day sitting, 60% standing and/or walking. Lifting objects 25lb or less will be frequent, 26-50 very rarely.
