THE POSITION

If this sounds like you, the Department of Transportation, Transportation Construction Inspector position, is the perfect opportunity for you!

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Within Engineering District 11-0, you will be responsible for conducting various technical duties to inspect materials and workmanship on construction projects. Your main objective will be to ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with approved construction codes, plans, standards, and specifications. This will involve inspecting all phases of transportation construction work, as well as assisting with tasks such as checking grades, elevations, structure stake-out, and roadway stake-out alongside the contractor or surveyor. In addition to this, you will also be responsible for inspecting the placement of materials, including cement concrete, bituminous concrete, drainage materials, and other relevant materials. You will provide compaction testing using the visual non-movement method for sub-surface strata, soils, and aggregates. As part of your role, you will interact with various stakeholders, including department staff, federal, state, and local agencies, legislators, and the general public. This is to ensure the effective administration of the projects. You will also be responsible for completing and performing daily project site activity (PSA) entries, mathematical calculations, item quantity estimates, project cost estimates, work orders, time extensions, and all other relevant project documentation, whether manually or electronically. Finally, you will assist in resolving any field problems that may arise during the construction process.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch
  • Vendor-controlled position. Work hours may vary to meet operational needs.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, as-hoc. at the discretion of the supervisor. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Bridgeville.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
  • Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
  • One year as an Engineering Technician (commonwealth title); or
  • Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (commonwealth titles); or
  • One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate's degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement:

  • This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
