O&M Technician II

The O&M Tech is responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of all plant equipment in accordance with written plant procedures and under the direction of the Plant Manager. The O&M tech 2 operates plant machinery and equipment (if applicable). In the absence of specific orders and/or directives, the O&M Tech exercises initiative, using experience and good judgment in plant operation.

The O&M Tech reports to the Plant Manager at the plant assigned for work duties and day-to-day assignments, and to the assigned Plant Manager for all other matters.

The O&M Tech 2 works a 12-hour shift as scheduled by the Plant Manager. The O&M Tech 2 are paid according to the Union (International Union of Operating Engineers Affiliated with AFL-CIO Local No. 95-95A) contract then in effect.

The following list of duties is not all-inclusive and is meant to serve as a guide for the O&M Tech's scope of work.

  • Monitor and control the operation of all plant machinery and equipment
  • Monitor and be responsible for the effect on plant operations of all activities occurring in the plant and on the distribution system, e.g. visitors, repairs, construction, etc.
  • Take readings, maintain logbooks as required, create reports and accumulate other information as necessary for production reports and recordkeeping
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled job assignments
  • Notify supervisors of unusual conditions, fire alarms, smoke alarms, power interruptions, utility issues, etc.
  • Operate - start, run, maintain, and stop - plant machinery and equipment in a safe and efficient manner, including but not limited to: Boilers, Chillers, Gas Turbine-Generator, pumps, valves, etc.
  • Monitor and record plant operating parameters
  • Monitor and record customers' consumption levels and demands
  • Perform tests of operating equipment
  • Monitor water chemistry in the various plant water systems, and adjust chemical feed systems as required
  • Be responsible for the Control Room's appearance and housekeeping
  • Upgrade skills and knowledge of plant systems, equipment, and components as directed or required
  • Have or work to obtain knowledge and/or skill sets held by Maintenance Mechanics
  • Required to learn and comply with company policies and procedures with respect to Safety and Environmental
  • Required to participate and/or conduct safety and environmental topics discussions and/or training

Knowledge & Skills

  • Mechanical aptitude and skill set as evaluated by the Lead Operator
  • Ability to not only learn complex systems and work under direction, but also to react to emergencies using judgment and intuitive skills
  • Computer proficiency required in MS Office, Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Knowledgeable and experienced with boiler digital and pneumatic controls
  • Sufficient physical attributes to be able to work in extremely hot and cold locations, the ability to work on ladders, to lift up to 75 lbs, and to work standing for several consecutive hours

Experience & Education Requirements

  • High school education
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience operating water tube steam boilers (100 psig or greater)
  • Chilled water system operating experience is preferred
  • NIULPE Class 2, Operator's license, or the ability to acquire within 6 months.
  • Universal Refrigeration License
